Why You Should Consider an Energy Audit

How would you feel if you were told that you could reduce your energy consumption by up to 30% without changing your daily habits? Well, you may be in luck. According to the Department of Energy, homeowners can save 5% - 30% simply by fixing energy inefficiencies after having a home energy audit conducted.

So what’s an energy audit entail?

Most auditors will recommend that the homeowner make a list of existing issues and provide a copy of an annual energy bill. From there, the auditors will want to know things such as

  • How efficient your home’s appliances are

  • How many people live in the home and how much time they spend there

  • Your typical thermostat settings

From there, an auditor will likely conduct either a blower-door test or thermographic scan to determine if and where air leaks are coming from. Once the leak locations are determined, the auditor will be able to tell you what issues you are facing and recommend solutions.

What’s the cost?

While Miller does not conduct energy audits, Homeadvisor.com estimates that the average cost is $341 in South Carolina. Additionally, many energy companies provide rebates for conducting energy audits as well as installing energy-efficient equipment, so always be sure to get in touch with a representative from your energy provider.
